About this Factsheet
This factsheet is intended to give you a some copy to work with when beginning to communicate about energy with your stakeholders. Please copy and paste as you wish to create a letter or communique to share your intentions on energy management with companies, staff or freelancers. We have found that sending this to stakeholders along with Factsheet #7 – Roles at a Glance can be very useful.

Energy is usually one of the second most significant contributors to environmental impacts – i.e. carbon emissions – caused by a festival (after travel & transport).
Research by Powerful Thinking has shown that energy management at UK outdoor events is typically wasteful, leading to unnecessary fuel use and emissions.1 The most common reason for this is not having an accurate understanding of power requirements in advance, creating uncertainty and the need for larger generators than actually required.
As part of our commitment to reducing environmental impacts, we aim to manage energy more smartly onsite. We can be achieve this by reducing energy demand, understanding better our energy needs, designing our systems more efficiently, and integrating renewable energy where possible.
To achieve this, almost everyone involved with the festival can play a valuable role. Please check out a factsheet written by Powerful Thinking that details what people in various roles can contribute: #7 – Roles at a Glance.
This year we will be working closely with the power supplier(s) to gain more accurate power requirements form everyone who uses power in advance. If you need some help working out what power you actually really need, there are factsheets available online that can help you e.g. Factsheet #19 – Working Out Energy Requirements for Concessions.
There are several things you can do to help us this year:
- Work out your energy requirements accurately in advance.
- Switch off lights and equipment when not in use.
- Use low-energy equipment wherever possible.
